The bronze statue of Charlie Kirk located outside the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) headquarters in Tempe was vandalized with red spray paint just days after its unveiling. Phoenix Police received calls regarding the defacement just after 8 a.m. on Sept. 13. The 8-foot-tall statue, which was unveiled on Sept. 10, was covered in paint across its face, hand, hats, and neck area. The vandalism occurred following the one-year mark of the conservative activist’s assassination at Utah Valley University. Red spray paint covered an X over Kirk’s face on the memorial, while a sad face was painted on the torso and the word “Jesus” was seemingly crossed out. TPUSA representatives stated they are reviewing surveillance video of the defacement that happened in the overnight hours and plan to restore the statue and replace the signs. Following the defacement, one supporter stated that society is at a turning point because of Kirk’s legacy. Charlie’s wife, Erika Kirk, responded to the vandalism by stating, “They thought a bullet would silence my husband’s voice but it only made it louder. They think spray paint can obscure his legacy, but it will only spread it further. Every attempt to tear down what Charlie built makes us root deeper and work even harder.” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell reacted by stating these acts will not be tolerated, while authorities ask anyone with information to call Phoenix Police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
