What happens when artificial intelligence gets it wrong? Some Facebook and Instagram users say Meta’s AI moderation system has wrongly flagged their accounts, leaving them locked out, demonetized and unable to get meaningful help through the appeals process. According to users who spoke with Channel 2 Action News, automated enforcement decisions have had real-world consequences for businesses and content creators. Ronald Byrd, a Gwinnett County content creator with more than 1.3 million Facebook followers, says he was earning about $1,500 a day before Meta allegedly stopped recommending and monetizing his page over claims of “inauthentic engagement.” Byrd says his income dropped to zero overnight and he has struggled to get clear answers. Another user, Melissa Mor, says her Instagram account was shut down over allegations of child sexual exploitation, despite insisting nothing on her account violated Meta’s standards. She says the account was restored, only to be shut down again months later.
