Russian authorities have placed nearly 200 people under medical observation after a laboratory worker died from plague in Siberia’s Irkutsk region. The woman, reportedly employed by the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, was hospitalised in Shelekhov with severe pneumonia symptoms, placed on a ventilator and later died. The district hospital was quarantined while officials traced contacts, cancelled public events and launched containment measures. Media reports have suggested a possible laboratory accident involving live bacteria, but authorities have not confirmed how she was infected or whether it was pneumonic plague. Governor Igor Kobzev says all identified contacts remain symptom-free and initial tests are negative.
