The death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has sparked speculation and suspicion after he went to a party in Mississippi. Friends of the Black college student are shedding light on the last time they saw him after he was found dead following a Fourth of July party on Horn Island. Several of Wells’ friends have been the target of accusations following his death roughly three months ago. Friends who were with Wells on Horn Island described the moment their boat began to sink, stating Wells chose to remain on the island with a girl rather than board the boat. Wells’ family lawyer, Ben Crump, noted that Wells left his cell phone behind on the boat, which his parents said he had not done previously. Another friend mentioned that Wells’ phone was not the only one left behind on the boat during the trip. A state grand jury has since declined to recommend charges in the death of Wells, though his family has pushed back on the report that there was no evidence of criminal conduct. The high-profile death has been the subject of online speculation in a state struggling with a history of racial tension. With the cause of death ruled undetermined, the Wells family is working to keep the investigation open.
