A judge ordered that Alex Murdaugh’s murder retrial will be moved outside South Carolina’s 14th Judicial Circuit to ensure a fair trial in the infamous case that captivated the nation in 2023. Judge Debra McCaslin granted a motion filed by Murdaugh’s defense to move the trial to a new venue. While McCaslin didn’t rule on where the retrial will happen, Friday’s decision means it won’t be in Colleton County, where Murdaugh was originally convicted of murder in the deaths of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned those convictions in May, finding former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during the trial and deprived Murdaugh of his right to a fair and impartial jury. McCaslin acknowledged the case’s publicity and Hill’s actions would make it virtually impossible for Murdaugh to get a fair trial in the 14th Circuit.
