Officials in Hillsborough County are investigating a massive wastewater spill that leaked 32 million gallons of partially treated sewage—enough to fill nearly 48 Olympic-sized pools—from the Falkenburg Road Advanced Water Treatment Plant in Brandon. The leak occurred just before Labor Day after an unknown industrial cleaning agent was dumped into the system, disrupting the plant’s biological treatment process and forcing it offline for four days. Some of the wastewater ended up in a nearby stormwater ditch, though officials say they were able to trap some of it. Hillsborough County has reported the incident to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and expects to receive a significant fine. The plant is now back in operation, and an investigation is underway to find out who is responsible.
